INTERPOL’s Innovation Centre, in its April 2026 edition of the Innovation Snapshots digest, highlights the impact of artificial intelligence and emerging technologies on policing.

  • The Netherlands Police uses virtual reality (VR)-based simulation training. The VR module is designed to assist police officers in detecting, examining, and preserving digital evidence at crime scenes.
  • The Costa Rican Police uses an AI-powered management model that integrates artificial intelligence tools with surveillance cameras deployed across the country, helping to monitor threats in real time and prevent crime.
  • The United Kingdom has developed deepfake detection technologies to help counter disinformation, including through the detection of fraud, identity impersonation, and synthetic images.
  • INTERPOL is implementing the SynthWave PLUS programme to support police forces across different countries in combating AI-generated deceptive content, including manipulated images and videos.
  • India has developed an AI application, Samarth, that provides police officers with rapid legal guidance, helping them apply laws accurately and effectively.
  • Modern policing is becoming more effective and precise in combating crime through the use of innovative technologies, including artificial intelligence and smart video surveillance tools.

What does this Centre do?
  • It studies emerging technologies (e.g. AI-powered drones).
  • It facilitates the exchange of experience and knowledge between police services of different countries.
  • It helps law enforcement officers develop technical skills and capabilities.
  • It provides training and technical support.
Risks of AI
  • AI-generated fake videos, voices, and images can be used by criminals to mislead or deceive people.
  • AI-generated false content can distort facts, evidence, or the actual course of events.
  • Alongside AI-related challenges, law enforcement must continue to develop its capabilities to respond effectively.
